How long is the defensive driving course?
The course is six (6) hours long.
How often can I take the Defensive Driving Course?
You may take the course once every 3 years to maintain insurance reduction benefits. You may take the course once every 18 months for point removal.
After I complete the NY Defensive Driving Course, how do I receive the point reduction?
We will report your successful completion directly to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The DMV will update your driving record and give you credit for the course.
You will be mailed a certificate of completion when you have successfully completed the Defensive Driving course. If you present your certificate to your insurance company or agent within 90 days after course completion, your liability and collision premium reduction will begin immediately, retroactive to the date you completed the course.
How much is my insurance discount?
The New York Defensive Driving Course provides a guaranteed 10 % reduction on the base rate of your liability, no-fault, and collision premiums. This discount last for 3 years.
When does the insurance discount begin?
As long as you turn in the completion certificate within 90 days of completing the online traffic course, the discount begins on the completion date.
How do I know my driving record shows my defensive driving course completion?
If you need to verify the course completion has been entered on your record, you may request a copy of your driving record from the DMV. To do so, you must complete a "Request for Driver and/or Vehicle Record Information" form available at any motor vehicle office. You may also download this form from the DMV internet website. If your course completion is not noted on your driving record more than ten weeks after you completed it, contact us and we will be happy to assist you.
What effect does point reduction have on my license and driving record?
Four points will be removed from the accumulated points you currently have on your license.
Point reduction applies only to points assessed for violations that occurred within the eighteen months immediately before course completion. It does not affect points for earlier violations, and cannot be used as "credit" against future violations or points.
